What is Asbestos?
Asbestos was a material used in building work back in the 1950s to 1980s. It proved to be an excellent insulator with fire protection properties; it’s no wonder the building trade used this fibrous material for over 40 years. The material was later banned after asbestos-related diseases were discovered. Asbestos is the largest single cause of fatal disease caused by work in this country.
While most incidences of asbestos have now been removed, there are buildings out there which may still contain asbestos. If disturbed it can become a highly hazardous substance. Nowadays, because it can be so dangerous, there are strict regulations concerning the removal of asbestos and its disposal. If the asbestos-containing material is in good condition, it doesn’t pose a risk and can be left alone. If disturbed during building work, for example, it should be removed by professionals. Asbestos only becomes harmful to health when it is disturbed and the asbestos fibres are released into the air. Asbestos fibres can cause fatal lung disease and lung cancer; thousands of fibres can be released when asbestos is disturbed.
Disposal of Asbestos
Waste containing more than 0.1 per cent asbestos is classed as hazardous/special waste. Any waste that contains asbestos, or is contaminated by asbestos, must be double-bagged and placed in a covered, locked skip. This includes overalls, over-shoes and respiratory protection equipment that have come into contact with asbestos. At 1clearance we make sure that we dispose of all contaminated equipment safely and efficiently.
Because of the nature of asbestos, you can’t just take it down to the local tip. Asbestos has to be disposed of in line with current legislation. Only licensed asbestos removal companies should attempt to remove asbestos-containing materials – never attempt to do this yourself. Here at 1clearance, we make sure we adhere to all laws regarding disposal of asbestos so you don’t have to worry about anything.
